I'm sceptical of the 2 million figure. Most of it likely diverted to Berlin and a few other cities. Minimal or no improvement to trains, airports, or internet. Germany could easily have influenced/subsidized large conglomerates like VW, Allianz, etc. to shift part of their business to the East. Cheaper labor. Clearly that didn't happen.

After 1945 with half of Germany occupied the free German industrial and financial structure were reorganized to the west, while the east gave reparations to the Russians, the west got investments from the usa. 70 Years later German political and industry leader cultivated that mindset only the west can produce, has infrastructure and has skilled workers. So they closed the last factories in the 90ies get rid of possible competitors, instead of investing. It seems it will take the courage of a US Entrepreneur to start a new age to remind Politics and Industry leaders of the legacy of big industrial leaders of the east, like Siemens or Rathenau.

I almost can feel the vast difference between an Eastern city like Liepzig compared to cities like Frankfurt, Munich and cities in the West Germany's countryside. I think it really has to do with your upbringing.
